Keep your stack as flat and low as possible — bumpy terrain creates holes you can't fill.
Leave one column (usually the far right) empty as a well, and drop the vertical I-piece there for a Tetris (four lines at once).
Plan around the next-piece preview — decide where the current piece goes based on what's coming.
Never cover an empty cell with an overhang; clearing the line above a hole is the only way to free it.
Use rotation and last-second slides ('finesse') to tuck pieces into gaps as the drop speeds up.
