Store listings carry an ESRB, PEGI or regional age rating plus descriptors such as violence, gambling themes or user interaction. That last descriptor matters most: it signals chat or user-generated content that no rating body can vet in advance. Skim a few recent reviews as well, since a game can add social features or ads in an update. If a game shows no rating information at all, treat that as a reason to choose something else.

Nearly every accidental-spending story starts with a saved payment method. On iPhone and iPad, use Screen Time to require a password for every purchase or disable in-app purchases outright. On Android, set Google Play to ask for authentication on all purchases and use Family Link so approvals come to you. Keep the child device signed out of your own store account, review app permissions, and mute or disable chat wherever the game allows it.

Younger children do best with games that have a clear finish line rather than endless reward loops, no social chat, and few interruptions. Puzzle, word, matching and drawing games all fit. Instant browser games are worth considering too: nothing installs, no account is created, and closing the tab genuinely ends the session. Whatever you choose, sit in on the first few sessions so you see the ads and prompts your child will see.
