Most Western grading stops at A, so when Japanese arcade and RPG games wanted a rank above A they used S — often read as Special, Superior or Super. Fighting-game and gacha communities adopted the habit, and it spread to every kind of tier list. Some creators stack it further with SS, SSS or T0 when a single S tier gets too crowded, but the meaning never changes: this is the very top of the scale.

A unit usually reaches S tier by being strong across many situations rather than exceptional in one. Reviewers look at raw output, how easy the unit is to use, whether it needs specific teammates or gear, and how much it still delivers at low investment. A character that carries you through story, farming and endgame with almost any team will outrank a specialist that only shines in one narrow mode.

S tier is an opinion about a snapshot in time, not a guarantee. The same character can be S for PvE and B for PvP, or S at full investment and mediocre without it.
