An installed app asks for system permissions and keeps running in the background; a browser game does neither. It executes inside a sandbox that the browser isolates from the rest of your device, so it cannot read your photos, contacts or messages, and it cannot start itself later. Close the tab and the game stops completely, leaving nothing behind but a small amount of local save data you can clear at any time.

The web page around the game is where problems live. Ignore any banner telling you to download a player, update Flash or install a client — a real HTML5 game needs none of them. Never type a game account password, payment details or a verification code into a page that is not the publisher own site. Be sparing with notification permission requests, and be wary of pages that open new tabs the moment you click anything.

Keep your browser updated, since most protection comes from the browser itself, and leave the pop-up blocker on. Prefer sites that let you play immediately without creating an account, because a game that never asks for personal data cannot leak it. For children, play in a normal tab you can see rather than fullscreen, and set the time limit on the browser app before the session starts.
