Gift Codes vs Redeem Codes: What Is the Difference?

The names are mostly interchangeable

Gift code, redeem code, coupon code, exchange code and CD key are all labels different studios chose for the same feature. Which one you see depends on the game and the translation of its interface, not on how the code works. If you are looking for the entry field, check every one of these labels in settings before concluding your game does not support codes.

The distinction that actually matters

What matters is where a code is redeemed and who issued it. In-game codes from the publisher are entered in the game or on its official site and grant in-game items. App store gift cards add balance to your platform account and are entered in the store, not the game. Mixing these up is the most common reason a perfectly valid code appears to fail.

Public codes vs personal codes

Public codes are announced to everyone and can normally be claimed once per account until they expire. Personal codes — compensation, support-issued rewards, pre-registration or creator codes — are tied to one account or usable only once in total. Sharing a personal code rarely works for the recipient and can leave you unable to claim it yourself.
