📚 How Are Game Tier Lists Made? Inside the Ranking Process

A tier list is built by picking a context, choosing criteria, testing or gathering data, and then sorting units into letter grades. Good lists document all four steps; weak ones just publish the letters. Knowing the process tells you which lists deserve your trust.

Step one: define the context

Nothing can be ranked until the author says what for. PvE bossing, speed farming, PvP arena and endgame time trials each reward completely different traits. Serious list makers also fix an investment level — for example, no duplicates and commonly available gear — because a unit that needs heavy investment looks very different at low and high budgets. A list without a stated context is basically untestable.

Step two: criteria, testing and data

From there authors score each unit on things like damage over a realistic fight length, survivability, team requirements, ease of use and how future-proof the kit looks. Evidence comes from damage calculations, in-game trials, and aggregate data such as usage rates in competitive modes. The strongest lists combine numbers with hands-on play, because raw math misses how awkward a unit can feel in real fights.

Step three: consensus and revision

Most published lists then pass through discussion — a panel of experienced players, a community vote, or a comment cycle where readers challenge placements. Disagreement is normal and useful; it usually reveals that a unit is context-dependent rather than misplaced. Finally the list gets a date and a patch number, and is revised when balance changes. Any list without those two markers should be treated as historical.

Questions fréquentes

Are tier lists objective?

Partly. The data behind them can be measured, but choosing the context, weighting the criteria and drawing the lines between tiers all involve judgment.

How can I tell a good tier list from a bad one?

A good one states the game version, the context it ranks for, the assumed investment level, and a short reason under each placement. Missing any of those is a warning sign.
